A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Carcassonne has a fascinating history of over 2,000 years. Like most fairytales, it has a happy ending.La Cité is Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval fortress. The wall is 3 km. Long and consists of an inner and an outer wall. See if you can count the 52 towers and barbicans along the walls.Within its walls, you can wander along the narrow, cobbled streets and the shops that line it. You might be surprised to learn that there are families who live in the town!The main attraction within the walls is the Château Comtal (the Count’s Castle). Like the city, a moat surrounds the castle. Marvel at its architecture that bears witness to the different eras it lived through.The city has a delightful legend of how it got its name. In reality, the Romans who fortified the town named it Julia Carsaco. This later evolved into Carcassonne.
